Newly Diagnosed

Prediabetes and feeling scared

I had a great internist. She sat me down in my early 50’s and explained that I was pre-diabetic. She gave me a monitoring device and told me to cut off all carbs. I became very depressed because I felt my body had betrayed me. My coworkers helped me to stick myself to monitor as I was terrified.

Learning to manage diabetes

I slowly learned to cook and bake over the next 10 years. I am on oral meds and I exercise regularly to keep complications to a minimum. Even though my A1C is below 6 I have neuropathy.

"You're not overweight"

When I meet a new doctor and he/she looks at my file and says you’re not overweight to have diabetes type 2 I tell them I am the 5%.

People who do not have diabetes take normal for granted. They can eat whatever they want to eat whenever they want to eat and it still at times makes me angry that I can’t. There is no cheat day for me.
