Medication pioglitazone, generic Actos

I was prescribed pioglitazone, generic Actos, 1 year ago along with a CGM.
I have gained about 18 lbs. and cannot lose it even eating less and trying to walk more. I also have CKD, and my nephrologist recently recommended speaking with my PCP about Ozempic. She feels that it would help with weight, help with my CKD and keep blood sugars and blood pressure in check. It is quite frustrating since my A1C is at 6.5. Anyone else use pioglitazone and feeling frustrated?

  1. I'm sorry you are dealing with this! Kidney and liver disease (NASH) are common comorbidities of T2D (chronic diseases that exist at the same time). Both are considered to be metabolic syndromes. Pioglitazone is commonly prescribed to treat NASH. If you haven't already, you might wish to talk to your doctor about your frustration with the treatment plan. Maybe there will be an alternative that can work for you. All the best, Kathy (Team member)

  2. I hear you, that sounds really frustrating, especially when your A1C is already in a good place and you’re still dealing with weight gain. It can feel like you’re doing everything right and not seeing the results you expect.

You’re definitely not alone in feeling this way with medications like that. Hopefully others can share their experiences too. It will be interesting to hear what your PCP says about the suggestion, keep us posted 💛

  3. Thanks for comments. I spoke with my PCP and started Ozempic in December. So far my blood sugars are more stable with A1C of 6.1 and weight loss of 11 pounds. Only side effect I've had is some feeling of nausea the day after taking my weekly shot. I'm feeling great and hoping to get walking when the weather warms up.

    1. That's fantastic! I'm glad to hear your blood sugar is under control and you are losing weight rather than gaining it. That must be a good feeling. I hope Ozempic continues to be effective for you with few side effects. Thanks for the update! Warmly, Lori (Team Member)
