Farxiga alternatives or next option

My mother has been on Farxiga for 10 years in combination with Janumet. She has gotten to where I believe they want her to switch medications and she seems resistant to the idea. I want to know what you moved to next from Farxiga? She is very thin and she has just gotten to where "she can't eat anything" without it spiking her sugars. I would like to see her be able to eat a little more because she is so thin. She laments being able to eat sandwiches because she can't eat bread. She should be able to eat a light sandwich with careful planning and portion control right? Am I way off here? I'm honestly not judging her diet here but seeking guidance- I think she may not have optimal control anymore with Farxiga. I worry a lot about that and the possibility of complications, etc. Any input is very much appreciated. She is in her 70s and in relatively good health with exception to this. Thank you kindly.

  1. Hi . We are not medical experts, so please keep that in mind. Her doctor is ultimately the best person to ask. There are plenty of other medications they might try. Here is a list of treatment options: https://type2diabetes.com/treatment. Here is another article specifically about medications: https://type2diabetes.com/treatment/medications. Given that she is so thin and, apparently, already on a severely restricted diet, her doctor might suggest moving to insulin. Insulin might allow her to eat more and keep her weight at a healthy level. Hopefully, others will chime in here who have experience with Farxiga. Does she have a continuous glucose monitor? If not, that might be a good investment. It can help her see on a regular basis what foods are increasing her blood sugar levels and which foods are safe. Does she eat a lot of protien? Let us know how her next appointment goes, if you don't mind. I will be thinking of you both. - Lori (Team Member)
