How Do You Celebrate Birthdays While Managing Type 2 Diabetes?

Hi everyone,

Living with Type 2 Diabetes has taught me to be more mindful about celebrations, especially birthdays. While birthdays are meant to be fun, they can sometimes bring challenges when it comes to cakes, sweets, and large meals.

Over the years, I've learned that birthdays don't have to revolve around sugary treats. Spending time with family, enjoying a healthy meal, and receiving thoughtful messages can make the day just as memorable. Last year, one of my favorite surprises was receiving a free birthday card online from friends who couldn't be there in person. It was a simple gesture, but it made my day special.

I'm interested in hearing how others in this community celebrate birthdays while managing diabetes.

* Do you have a favorite diabetes-friendly birthday dessert?
* How do you handle birthday cake and sweet treats?
* Do you focus more on activities and family time than food?
* What are some healthy birthday traditions you've adopted?

I believe sharing ideas can help all of us enjoy special occasions while staying committed to our health goals.

Looking forward to hearing your experiences and tips!

  1. What a fantastic topic, ! Thanks for creating this forum. I'm really interested in reading what others have to say. I love that you have found other, non-food ways to embrace birthdays.
I'm not a huge fan of cake, so I always request ice cream cake on my birthday. If people make it themselves (which is really easy), they can make it with sugar-free ice cream. You still have to count the carbs, but it's far less damaging than regular cake and ice cream. - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Hi Lori, where can you buy sugar free Ice cream and does it taste good?

    1. I have only tried Breyer's and Edy's brands and I really don't notice much difference. The Edy's slowed-churned ice cream is really good. Though neither has any added sugar. they both still have carbohydrates from other sources though so you do have to be careful. They are a great alternative though when you have an ice ceam craving. I am usually able to find them at major grocery stores. I think our local Dollar General even has the Edy's brand. - Lori (Team Member)

  3. Thanks for letting me know, we don’t have Dollar General.
