Experiences of Culturally Driven Diabetes-Related Stigma Among Minoritized Young Adults with Type 2 Diabetes

Dear Prospective Participant:
Hello, my name is Sadana Padmanabhan, and I am from Thomas Jefferson University’s Department of Health Science & Clinical Practice. Working with Dr. Kirby Wycoff, PhD, I am inviting you to consider participating in a research study titled Experiences of Culturally Driven Diabetes-Related Stigma Among Minoritized Young Adults with Type 2 Diabetes.

The purpose of this study is to explore how racially and ethnically minoritized young adults (ages 18 to 29) with type 2 diabetes within the Northeast United States culturally describe their experiences of culturally driven diabetes-related stigma and its influence on their diabetes self-management behaviors. While this study may not directly benefit you, hearing your experiences may benefit researchers, clinicians, healthcare organizations, and community health programs develop culturally responsive care for
ethnically and racially minoritized young adults with type 2 diabetes.

If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete an anonymous online survey consisting of two parts. The first section will collect demographic information, and the second section will include open-ended questions about your experiences with diabetes-related stigma, cultural factors that may drive it, and how that influences your diabetes self-management behaviors. Participation is expected to take approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. You may choose not to participate and may stop participating at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. Your
diabetes care at Jefferson or participation in any support groups will not be affected if you choose not to participate in this study.

Any information you provide will be kept confidential to the extent permitted by law. Your name will not be identified or associated with specific responses in reports, presentations, or publications resulting from this research.
