Newly diagnosed with type2

Hi everyone, I was just diagnosed with type 2, along with high cholesterol and triglycerides. A1c = 10.

Reason I went for blood work was I passed out and woke up 10 seconds later with my arms convulsing. I should of went to the emergency room but I didn't go. Instead I called my doctor a week later and told him what happened.

He said it may be cough syncope being that after I coughed hard I passed out. But blood shows I'm a diabetic so he put me on janumet XR 50/500 two times a day. So far it's working good. It took a week or so to see the glucose go down. I'm eating better and losing weight. I'm male, 225lbs, 5'10.

I'm realizing there is no cure but I can go into remission. I retest blood in 3 months. He also put me on a statin, but I haven't taken it and don't want to take it. I will see what my cholesterol is in 3 months. I think my diet change should lower it naturally, I'm hoping.

I'm feeling thinner and have more energy. It's been 3 weeks I think since I started the pill. Been finger sticking daily.

I also smoke, I smoked 2 packs a day, now down to 1 pack a day and looking to quit.

I'm finding out my body reacts to certain foods. Berries make me spike. Penne pasta doesn't make me spike. So weird, it's supposed to be the opposite. I don't eat pasta much anymore being it's carbs. Trying to stay away from carbs and sugar.

I'm in my 50's and still love candy like a child, but I stay away from it now, being that sugar is poison. Carbs too.

Been eating more fruits n veggies with chicken, seafood, steak once in a while. No breads. Water only.

I'm also a 24/7 caregiver to a dementia patient battling cancer. So I need to take care of myself being that I have no respite and my stress is chronic.

I also recently quick cannabis because it affects the medication I'm taking. I loved cannabis because it took the stress away and relaxed me. So now I need another outlet. I may take up walking/exercise.

So that's what I'm dealing with. Thanks for listening. Any advice for me is greatly appreciated.

  1. Hi ! It sounds like you are off to a fantastic start! Exercise should help with both the cannabis craving and maintaining your blood sugar levels. It's strange how different people react to different foods. Do you eat meat or meat sauce with pasta? If so, that might explain the less drastic reaction. The protein can help slow digestion and improve blood sugar levels.
Kuddos to you for getting down to a pack a day! Smoking is a powerful addiction. Any reduction is a success. Here is an article from our COPD community about quitting smoking: https://copd.net/pulmonary-rehab/lifestyle/quitting-smoking. I thought you might find some of the tips and treatments helpful.
If you are unable to reduce your cholesterol on your own, know that there are not effective alternatives to statins. It might be worthwhile to ask you doctor about them. We are here for you whenever you need us. Best wishes! - Lori (Team Member)
