Newbie Question On Glucose Levels

Hello all,

Backstory:

I was recently (2 weeks ago) diagnosed with T2 and from day one Ive pretty much did a 180 on eating habits.

I went from glucose levels of almost 400 (yikes and day of diagnosis) to levels of around 100 to 130 per check within 3 days after I went aggressive with a keto diet change. I check levels 3x a day before / after meals and the levels seem to hover around 110 to 130 ranges and dr was confident getting off metformin was a possibility after next A1C test in 2 1/2 months depending on results.

My question is this, I noticed sometimes in the morning my levels are 140 to 145. Is this caused from carry over from what I ate the day before? Im confused why they'd be higher on the morning after and not the day of my eating something that may be higher on the GI scale.

Also, is there a optimal time to check levels in the morning? Immediately after waking, after morning exercises / walk etc?

Thank you for any help provided.

  1. , Thanks for reaching out. This is a great question! What you described is often referred to as the "dawn phenomenon." This article explains more about the dawn phenomenon: https://type2diabetes.com/clinical/morning-high-blood-sugar or if you prefer, this link is for a brief video explanation: https://type2diabetes.com/video/dawn-phenomenon. Please know that you are not alone! The dawn phenomenon is confusing and frustrating! There isn't one specific ideal time of the morning to test your blood sugar, it depends on each person and their unique routine. I hope the information in this article and/or video is helpful! Feel free to reach out with any other questions or concerns.

    1. I commend you on being proactive in your care. Some other things to consider beside your blood sugar and A1C are cholesterol levels and kidney function tests (creatinine, BUN, eGFR). Your family history and age may determine your risk profile for other conditions related to diabetes. Review the information on dawn phenomenon and continue with healthy habits. Keep up the good work.
