Metformin side effect - diarrhea- how long?
I am taking Metformin 1500 MG a day. At least once a day I have diarrhea. Some days 2 or 3 times. I understand this is a "temporary " side effect of Metformin but at what point do I insist on a change in medication. All this diarrhea can not be good for intestines/colon. It's been 30 days since I started. Can anyone quantify for me when to throw in the towel? 30, 60, 90 days?
PS I had been on 1000 MG but increased on Monday to 1500. My BS # was 134 today which was very welcome after weeks of 140 -180.
, thanks for posting your question. I can understand why this would be such a bothersome side effect from your metformin. Unfortunately, I'm not able to give you a definitive answer as to when your diarrhea may subside. I encourage you to reach out to your doctor who prescribed the medication, and see if they have any feedback for you. More than likely, they will be able to give you a closer timeline and expectation of what taking the medication might look like for you because they are familiar with your history.
