Glucose meters

Why doesn't medicare pay for the free style Libra or that type of meter, instead of taking finger sticks 3 times a day?

  1. Hello , You might have to do some research on that one or talk to your health care provider. My husband starts Medicare in March 2023. This was one of the questions that he asked and was told that typically, Medicare covers 80% of the approved costs for meters. Now what that means, I'm not sure. I am doing more research on this. Thanks for a great question. Diane (Team Member)

    1. Medicare will cover if 1)you are on insulin several times a day or 2)you can verify or demonstrate that your blood sugars are uncontrolled inspite of multiple medication therapy. You may have to talk to your provider about submitting a prior approval statement. I know providers are busy so maybe their nurse or nurse practitioner or physician assistant can submit the letter. You can assist in the process by keeping a written log of your blood sugar readings - write down the date, time, and result of your testing. Hard data always helps.

Also document any coexisting medical problems that is a direct result of uncontrolled or longstanding blood sugar problems such as neuropathy, especially of fingers, or feet, vision problems (retinopathy) or chronic kidney disease and heart disease. These issues can further complicate your health and increase the cost of your care. It helps to be your own advocate and help your provider with the documentation. Let me know if this helps.
