confused about my fasting glucose

hi, Newbie here and I appreciate any help.

I’m a 52, Asian male in good health. i have been practicing low carb and low sugar diet for the last 5 years to stay fit. However, my morning fasting glucose during my annual check-up has gradually increased from 98 to 110 now. My doctor says no need to see a specialist, but i want to better understand why my glucose is getting higher and higher every year.

I just started taking glucose test at home since last week and here are my findings: when i go to bed, my glucose is around 105, when i wake up, it’s 120. 2 hours after breakfast, it’s 109. before dinner, it’s 100. 2 hours after dinner, it’s 138.

I have been practicing intermittent fasting with first meal being lunch, until last week. Some people told me my morning fasting glucose high is due to my fasting schedule. So i stopped.

what do you guys think? Why is my fasting glucose high? do i have insulin resistance? Am i pre diabetic? What should i do differently to lower my fasting glucose level safely?

Thanks a lot,

Wilson

  1. you may be experiencing Dawn phenomenon. This is when your body releases cortisone and grownth prior to getting up in the mornings. The cortisone and other hormones cause blood sugar to rise by releasing glucagon from the liver. Glucagon is glucose stored in the liver. Here is an article that may explain Dawn phenomenon further.

Based on your age, you may be experiencing prediabetes. The best way to find out is to follow up with your provider. Until then continue with your healthy lifestyle changes of exercise and healthy meals. I would add is good sleep habits and manage your stress. Let me know if this helps. 1. Thanks, Trinette. What you said is very helpful. i will get a Libre 3 to get more data points before i go see a specialist. what’s puzzling is i’m very lean and has been on low carb, low sugar for 5 years. i work out daily for at least 30 mins. i have little stress and get good sleep. so what’s causing my condition? what can i do differently to lower my baseline glucose? is taking supplements my only option? i’m hesitant to see a specialist as i don’t want to be on pills. if i do need to take supplements, what are your suggestions? Berberine? Nopal? bitter melon?

      1. the older you get, the more you might have to dial back your carbohydrates. I’ve had to dial mine back to less than 10g a day and that has kept away all health symptoms and keeps my blood glucose in very healthy ranges (no meds).

    2. hello

      1. have you heard of “physiological insulin resistance” or “ adaptive glucose sparing”? Looks like that’s what my condition is called.
