Coconut oil, what does the evidence say?

I saw a YouTube Mayo Clinic video on diabetes and the expert Dr they had on made a comment and reference to one study that said we shouldn’t be eating coconut oil. His phrase was ‘it belongs on the outside of the body, not the inside.’ What does the research/evidence say?

  1. Hi Shelley! In addition to comments from the community, the article linked below may help.

Coconut has been feared based on its high saturated fat content and the belief that a diet high in saturated fat increases LDL cholesterol (“bad cholesterol”) thus increasing risk of cardiovascular disease, but recent research has questioned the role that saturated fat plays in cardiovascular disease.

Coconut may work in one's diet - but as this may differ by person we recommend those in the community check in with their doctor as well and keep up with research!

    1. Thanks Margot!

      1. Just Checking in. Have you started using Coconut oil? But as Margot stated, consuming large amounts of it can bring on high levels of saturated fat. I take a spoon full 2days a week and I apply to my feet and hands due to the antifungal properties. B. Keith Crear III (Team Member)
