It's Not Easy

I have been a Type II diabetic for 9 years. Fortunately for me it is diet-controlled.

Making healthy eating choices

I have been a chocoholic since childhood, which makes it tempting for me to pick up some chocolate. (I will admit that once in a while, I will have a mini-sized piece of chocolate to satisfy my craving!) However, what I do instead is go for fruit or veggies. I particularly find it satisfying to have a sliced apple or celery and dip it in about a tablespoon of peanut butter. It's crunchy and sweet and takes care of my sweet tooth cravings. I also enjoy baked sweet potatoes with a dab of margarine. It's a warm, filling treat and very healthy!

I have had stomach issues for years and recently underwent major colon surgery and am now slowly reintroducing fresh fruits and vegetables. I am finding that at this time, it is easier for me to have cooked veggies.

Diabetes training classes

I have attended Diabetes training classes that were offered through my primary care physician. These classes were held at a local hospital by invitation only. I found these classes to be very educational and rewarding. I learned the dos and don'ts. It is quite a challenge, however, knowing how everything works to help me to stay on top of this nasty disease.

I'm trying very hard to keep my blood sugars in check with my food choices so that I won't have to go on diabetic medication.
