You Looked Okay To Me

I know most of you have heard this at some point in your life. You can't see diabetes, so everyone assumes we are just okay.

I have chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis, psoriatic arthritis, and high blood pressure, just to name a few. Why do people make these assumptions? I guess it's better than saying, you look bad.

It's when it's accusatory, that upsets me the most. It's like saying, you were okay yesterday.

What are your thoughts on this? We would love to hear from you.

  1. People with out diabetes will never fully understand, even with other illnesses on top of diabetes, I have a degenitive disc and just hurt my siatica. It can interfere with my diabetes care for the excercise part. I know what you mean by diabetes is a hidden condition. I felt like buying a tshirt that says, I have diabetes and it’s a full time job without pay” lol. I get mad when people say which is the bad one Type 1 or Type 2, omg, stupid question. They both have challenges. Why on earth isn’t there more info out there about Diabetes. There is for cancer. And I am not educating people on diabetes, I don’t have the energy for stupid people who should keep there comments to there self. I just don’t bring it up anymore unless I have to. My nephew on my husbands side of the family has Type 1 and I never asked questions. I don’t pry on other people’s health.
Yes we may look fine, but what people don’t get, is what are lives are like everyday. It’s hard work and lots goes into this disease annd to have other issues with health on top of diabetes can bring you to tears on some days especially if it involves pain. And we did not cause are diabetes we just have a lousy pancreas. I know what you’re going through there’s things I can’t do because of my back pain. And oh well if the vaccuming doesn’t get done oh well, my daughter helps but she works full time so does my hubby and he has diabetes to. Diagnosed 2 years ago. So I do what I can and that’s it. It must be hard having arthritis and osteoporosis that’s a lot of pain, do you take meds for the pain. I know you have to be careful with medications for other ailments when you have diabetes, it can be difficult to keep your sugars balanced. I get an injection in my left eye every three months and it concerns me what this can do to my sugars. I have some swelling in my left eye. So injections help the swelling. Not a pleasant procedure. I know what I have to do to help it but I haven’t been able to quit smoking with all the stress. I have cut down a lot. But not easy to quit all together. And I hate being lectured on it, it makes it even worse.

    1. Hello , Thanks for sharing so much of your journey with us. It's refreshing to have someone "tell it like it is".
I do take pain medication because of several autoimmune illnesses. My problem is having the medications fight against each other. I am also on a biologic, so I keep getting infections. My doctors are trying to figure this one out.
Getting an injection in the eye, can't be pleasant, but I do understand that you have to do what's best for you.
I had smoked for years. I did give it up, it wasn't easy. It's been 26 years smoke-free.
Enjoy the holiday season and don't worry about a thing. Tomorrow is a new day.
