Why Do I Have So Many Un-use Medication Bottles?

This is a fairly easy question for me. I have several autoimmune illnesses and my medications change all the time. I just don't know what to do with all the extra stuff. Do you throw them in the trash or can you flush them down the toilet?

I know this is silly, but with so many people having to do without medication these days, maybe the pharmacist could use them. Probably not, I'm sure they have an expiration period on them.

What do you do with unused medication, especially if it's insulin or needles? We would love to hear your thoughts on this.

  1. , I'm over in the UK and here you can return any unused/out of date medication to the pharmacy. I don't think they reuse them for anyone else though. I think for safety reasons they have to dispose of anything that's been returned. I have heard of some charities that will take excess supplies. Maybe you could look into whether that's an option?

    1. Hello, and , I just hope that someone can use them. We have so many people here who can't afford to get their medication. To me, it would be sad to just discard them, especially if they still have a good shelf life. I have made a few phone calls and will see what they say. Thanks for sharing and for the article. .

  2. Hi . Here is an AARP article about prescription drug donations that might be helpful: https://www.aarp.org/health/drugs-supplements/info-2022/how-to-donate-prescription-drugs.html. I'd love to hear what others have to say. When my sister died of breast cancer, I brought all her medications to the police department where they had a locked recepitcle for unused medications. I assume they disposed of them, but I am not sure. Some were opioids, which we didn't want to leave lying around. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)
