Tips on t2 numbers

What should my numbers be between meals? I'm told to keep between 90-120. Last a1c was 7.2. Taking 500mg metformin and 1 mg glimepiride 1x a day. Thanks for your help

  1. Hi there,

To me, the answer is yes and no.

A HbA1c of 7.2% is equivalent to an average glycemia of 160mg/dl. In these conditions, keeping it between 90 and 120mg/dl isn't a realistic goal.

90-120mg/dl is a good target if your diabetes is well under control. You'd need a HbA1c around 5% for that which takes out of the diabetic and prediabetic ranges. So it's a nice long term target, but I wouldn't think it's a good one for you right now. You'll feel disappointed if you fail to reach that target.

In my experience, one important thing with diabetes is to manage expectations. It's important not to set unrealistic goals that will make you give up. What you can do is monitor your glycemia a lot, learn about how to manage your diabetes (diet, exercise), and make a plan to reach 5% HbA1c within a few months.

It will be hard, but depending on the stage of your condition, it can be within reach.

    1. I’ve been able to keep my fasting glucose numbers below 120 after i adopted a ketogenic lifestyle with intermittent fasting. This approach has put my 2TD into remission now for almost a year.

      1. , So glad you found something that works for you! Thanks for sharing with us.

    2. The American Diabetes Association recommends aiming for a blood sugar level between 70 to 130 mg/dl before meals and less than 180 mg/dl one to two hours after a meal. Of course, your doctor may have a more detailed plan for you as everyone's experience with diabetes is different. Hope this helps! Warmly, Latoya (Team Member)

      1. what kind of lifestyle changes have you adopted to get your numbers down. Do you exercise? The recommendations are 150 minutes per week of activity. Some other things to consider, drinking mostly water for your liquids, getting a good nights sleep at least 7 hours per night and keep stress under control. Doing all of these things consistently will help bring your numbers down. Trinette, community moderator.
