What are your tips for finding a good specialist?

Have you found a good endocrinologist, registered dietitian, or other specialist? Share your tips with fellow community members! If you haven’t found a good specialist, what challenges have you faced?

  1. A. There are numerous resources available to help you find a good specialist. The Association of Incoming Investigators (AII) www.aii-online.org is a great place to start. They have a multitude of resources to help you find the perfect specialist match including an NDI search tool, in-person and online retreats, webinars, and more.

    B. Finding a good specialist can be challenging, but there are some tips that can help:

    1) Be patient and persistent – don’t give up! It can take time to find the right specialist match, but it is worth it in the end.

    2) Do your research – do your due diligence on the specific doctor or dietitian you are looking for. Find their bio, credentials, education, any local connections they may have, their social media presence and, anything else you can find out about them!

    3) Go with your gut feeling - if something doesn’t feel right about a potential specialist match, then trust your gut! If something feels like it isn’t quite right, then move on to another match.

    4) Ask for recommendations – ask for recommendations from friends and family or online forums like NBCM or Q&A websites like Quora! Getting recommendations from people that know the doctor or dietitian well can be extremely helpful in finding a good match!

    1. Keep trying until you find a good fit!

      1. That is some good advice, . Have you found a doctor who inspires confidence? If so, how long did it take? Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)

    2. I have been seeing my beloved endocrinologist for about 12 years! I have always had a specialist as my PCP highly recommended having one. Unfortunately she is now our until August so I will see how my PCP feels about taking over until then or go to the other one in my plan. They are both females and I love female doctors!

      1. That is fantastic, ! I am glad your endocrinologist will be returning after her leave. A few months without her should be manageable, especially since you also have a good relationship with your PCP.- Lori (Team Member)

    3. Asking your PCP for a referral

      1. I think that asking your primary care for a referral is a great way to find a doctor. Have you had luck this way finding someone you liked? -Lauren (team member)
