What is meal planning?

How can I do it? Will it help?

  1. Meal planning is planning out meals for a week or certain amount of time in advance; many find meal planning to be helpful in managing their type 2 diabetes, as they can pick out diabetes-friendly meals and recipes beforehand and know what they will need to shop for or what they will be eating throughout the week so that there will be no surprises or urge to order or pick up food that may not be as diabetes-friendly!

The benefits of meal planning, and tips to get started, are available in these articles:

    1. Getting tired of eating the same foods

      1. It does get tiring, . Do you like foods influenced by a variety of cultures? I have found that the flavors of Thai, Indian and Middle Eastern foods make eating healthy a lot more interesting. How are you doing with your blood sugar management? Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)

      2. Thanks for the response, Lori. Good reminder! Yes, I do like Thai and other ethnic foods, but my hubby isn't quite as interested in them as I am. We're vegetarian also, so that is another slightly limiting factor. I will keep hunting up recipes that may work ok for the both of us!

    2. The time needed and having the good in hand to meal prep.

      1. Meal prep can be awful time-consuming. I often make a double or triple batch of recipes when I cook so I can put some aside in meal-sized containers and freeze them. That makes fast, healthy meals so much easier. I also cook family-sized trays of chicken up all and once, chop up the cooked meat and put it in serving-sized baggies in the freezer for quick and easy meals. Would any of those options work for you? Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    3. Too tired, cooking for one, limited choices

      1. I can see how you might get burned-out, cooking for one, . Sometimes, I feel more motivated when I am cooking for others. Have you considered cooking more complicated, tasty meals in big batches so you can freeze single servings? Those might be good options for days when you can't think or what to eat and don't feel like cooking. Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
