Several episodes of blood sugars dropping

I have type 2 and take 14 g of rybelsus and 10 m of glipizide. My a1c went from 9 to 6. My problem is I get low blood sugar episodes and I have to stuff my face with oj or sweets until I come back to life, usually a couple hours. Seems to happen in afternoons around 3 to 5 and tends to occur after I've eaten. I tried cutting out the glipizide but my a1c went up to 7. Any suggestions.

  1. Hi . Have you talked with your doctor about the blood sugar drops? You might need an adjustment in your medication. I wonder whether eating an extra snack around 2 p.m. or so might help as well. One helpful option might be a continuous glucose monitor. Even if you use one for only a couple of weeks, it might help you identify the triggers and address them. I hope you get some input from others who have had similar experiences. Warmly, Lori (Team Member)

    1. I was in a situation where I changed my lifestyle around. The culprit of having too much medication was it for me. But, I had multiple in depth conversations with my health care professional who deemed it necessary to change...I was able to get off insulin! My A1c was 8.9 and it's now 6.8. I use a Continuous Glucose Monitor as well to see what food shoes I have and when my lows are. If I have the lows is because I'm eating the wrong kinds of food or too much. I was told not to feed the medicine, but to get off or decrease medicine when the time is right. But, as always, check with your health care provider before changing something. Best of luck.

      1. Thanks for sharing your personal experience, it is always helpful to our community members to know they are not alone. I'm glad to hear that you have a good relationship with your healthcare team and you are able to openly discuss your issues and come up with a solution together. How long did it take you to figure out what you needed to manage your type 2 diabetes? I'm glad you have a system in place that works well for you! -Lauren (team member)

      2. I have not heard you get lows from eating too much. Interesting.

    2. Thank you for your continued support as well. It took about 3 months to get everything worked out to the point of repeated lows. Then, after 3 days of continuous lows, my team took about a week to figure out what the next steps were. Thank you, Lauren.

      1. Thank goodness you have a great team that is willing to spend the time figuring out how to keep your blood sugar in a safe range. I'm glad to hear this is all figured out! All the best, Lauren (Team member)
