Low sugar

I'm new to this subject. I had to call an ambulance last night because my sugar had dropped to 23. I thought I was having a heart attack. My chest hurt so bad and I was shaking all over . I was terrified. I drank juice and a piece of chocolate and by the time the ambulance got to me my sugar was 230 . It eventually topped out at 279. Has any one been through this type of roller coaster ? I am scared of my meds now .

  1. So sorry to hear about your scare. It is so hard to avoid overcorrecting with low blood sugars because of the panic. Here are some steps to follow if this happens again. 1)Check you blood sugar first, 2) if less than 60, drink 8 ounces of orange juice or regular sugar. If higher than 60 drink 4 ounces, 3)wait 15 minutes and then recheck. Blood sugar should be 70 or higher. Eat a sandwich or boiled egg or some kind of protein and complex carb to keep your sugar up

Other foods you can use to raise blood sugar fast: Glucose tablets (see instructions)
    Gel tube (see instructions)
4 ounces (1/2 cup) of juice or regular soda (not diet)
1 tablespoon of sugar, honey, or corn syrup
Hard candies, jellybeans, or gumdrops—see food label for how many to consume.
Avoid using chocolate because the fat in the chocolate will slow down the sugar getting into bloodstream.
If blood sugar is extremely low, like the 23, put the sugar under your tongue for it to get into your system faster.

You will need to discuss this with your provider if it happens more than 3 times a week. Let me know if this helps. Trinette Stanford, community moderator
