Blood sugar spikes

My A1c has edged up to 6.5 a few times, prompting me to get serious about heading off a slide into full blown diabetes..ive gone on a keto diet, and my A1c today was 5.1. I'm very pleased, but through my continuous glucose monitor, I know that whenever I have even a .modest amount of carbs, I have a very quick spike up to like 230, and once it went to 330!...even though it quickly drops down, this is not normal, and I've got to believe there's damage being down even with these temporary spikes, and even though my average is down to pretty good levels. Is this a sign of maybe something else going on?

  1. Hi . Have you talked with your doctor about your blood sugar spikes? Generally speaking, a reading of 330 is pretty high, but it shouldn't cause harm if it drops back down quickly and if you don't get that kind of reading often. However, we are not medical experts, so keep that in mind and definitely talk to your doctor. We don't want to offer any advice that puts you are greater risk. A referral to a dietician who specializes in diabetes might also shed some light on what is happening. You might get a better idea of the impact on your body of going entirely carb-free and then reintroducing occasional carbs. Most insurance companies will cover the visits if you have a referral. I wish I had better answers, but we want to make sure you get the best possible care. Please keep us posted. I'll be thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Just found out today about the new 5.1 A1C--the Doctor seemed pleased, so thats the focus, rather than the spikes that were happening when it seemed the blood sugar was not controllable. But I dont want to ignore those spikes, so will ask further

      1. I can see why your doctor was happy about that number, . It sounds like you worked hard to get there. I hope you get answers to your blood-spike question though. Unfortunately, self-advocacy is really important these days with the limited time doctors have for each patient. - Lori (Team Member)
