I’m a wife and mom of 3, business owner, and a genetic diabetic.

Shocked, sad, and disappointed

In March 2019, a medical follow-up on one condition resulted in me leaving the doctor’s office as a Type 2 Diabetic. I was shocked, sad, and disappointed.

At first glance, you would probably think that I don’t fit the American Diabetes Association guidelines of a Type 2 Diabetic. I’m actually underweight, weighing 100lbs.

Family history and gestational diabetes

However, there is a family history of diabetes that runs on both sides of my family. Although my mom does not have it, my dad suffers from Type 2. In fact, my oldest half-sibling was diagnosed just a week prior. I’ve also dealt with gestational diabetes with two out of my three pregnancies.

My diagnosis mainly was due to genetics.

Making changes

I am adjusting to a new normal consisting of medicine, continuous testing, and a more limited diet that I am already on currently.

To say that it’s overwhelming is truly an understatement. My entire life has changed. And even though my blood sugars are now normal, my life will never be the same.
