Reversing Type 2 again

I fell into type 2 back in 2019 and quickly went from a 11.5 a1c to below 6 in 6 months on Metformin. Now, 4 years later, for some reason it spiked back up to 10.3. Back on metformin. Has anyone had a spike like this and got it back down? I lost about 18 pounds and having a hard time getting it back up. I’m 6’8” 248. Was 265.

    1. Hello, yes... my story is a bit different but I was able to get my a1c back down... when I was going through cancer treatments I had to be on an insulin pump bc of the high dose IV steroids. I also gained over 60 pounds during that time (and was already overweight.) My a1c spiked to over an 11. After I was finished with treatments, we did a trial of taking me off the pump to see if I could get my a1c under control. We played around with my meds a few different times. It took a good 2 years to get to where I'm at now, a 5.8 and 105 pounds down from my highest weight with about 50 left to lose. I'm currently on jardiance and tresiba.
      My endocrinologist also suggested a more plant forward based diet and intermittent fasting. With that, I've noticed quite a difference. My blood sugars are improved even more and I'm needing quite a bit less long acting insulin than before!

      1. Definitely. We've gone more plant forward, at the suggestion of both my endocrinologist and cardiologist. We do eat fish, rarely chicken. We also use oat milk instead of dairy milk. I notice I feel better.

      2. My movement forward with more plants has also been embraced by my husband so fresh vegetables are a staple in the house. Our cardiologist has recommended more fish but we don't seem to be skilled in making that happen. We love fish but it never comes to mind when we are meal planning. Rarely having chicken, is that from a dislike or a recommendation? Just curious, we eat more chicken than any other meat. I have decreased my milk consumption which has been very hard as this was a hard rule growing up, milk at every meal. I have moved to almond milk but it's not as enjoyable especially in my evening tea. I also feel so much better mentally and physically when I know I'm eating better. Shelley, T2D moderator.

    2. Hi . It is always worth trying. I have a niece who brought her A1C down with dietary changes after her initial diagnoses and avoided medication, but she picked up some old habits again over the next year. When her A1C climbed up again, she lost a few pounds she had regained and a few more, avoiding medication again. Do you feel like there is more you can do? You are already at a pretty healthy weight for your height. If you have done all you can and your numbers are still high, please try not to beat yourself up about it. Most people with Type 2 diabetes eventually reach a point where dietary and lifestyle changes just are not enough. Gentle hugs. - Lori (Team Member)
