Oral surgery and limited diet.

Hello, I have type 2 diabetes, and have had it uncontrolled for many years, I'm doing much better now, have gotten my A1c down to 6.5.
In a few days, I have to have oral surgery, one or two teeth removed and I'm stressing about my insulin intake and what I can eat, my Dr. says to cut my Lantus in half the day I go in. Before I continue, I am not your average diabetic, so what works, and don't work with others, may not be the same for me. I have sugar-free pudding and jello, I don't normally eat these and realize that I might actually need the sugar. If I cut the Lantus for a few days and am able to eat more solid foods I'm going to have to go slowly and my levels are going to be bad for a few weeks. Unfortunately, I can only raise the Lantus 1 unit every few days, or I will repeatedly drop, I am currently on 30/31 twice a day, so dropping it in half is going to take a while to get back. If I cut the Lantus now my levels will be high and I worry about the healing process. I was thinking I would drink juice, but that has sugar, and sugar is one of the things they don't want me to have. I need to have an option to keep my Lantus as it is, or a few lower and be able to keep my levels from dropping. This is only for a few days, after the third day or so I will likely have a sweet potato for dinner, the rest of the day, lol, I have no idea. Would love to have suggestions. TIA.

  1. , this is a great question. I hope others will chime in to share their personal experiences. If you have access to a registered dietician, they may be a great source. Would you maybe be able to drink protein shakes? Here's an article on how to choose protein powder: https://type2diabetes.com/nutrition/protein-powder. Maybe a blended soup? I hope your surgery goes well! Please keep us updated on how everything goes if you feel comfortable doing so. Best, Minel (Team Member)

    1. Thank you for replying, so far so good. I bought some Equate protein drinks last night, tasted so good I thought I would go buy some more, but they got a really bad rating on Fooducate. I didn't take my second dose of Lantus last night, I just had some wheat bread soaked in sodium-free chicken broth just to bring me up enough to take at least one dose today, the protein drink does not do it. I only bought sugar-free jello and pudding and feel like I have to go buy regular, but really hesitant on that. I bought potatoes (regular and sweet) and will eat that for dinner for a few days, but probably not until Sat. I have yogurt, not the healthiest one, but it's soft and also helps, sometimes, with raising me enough to take insulin. Still trying to figure it out, so hungry though, lol.

      1. , thank you. I really appreciate the update. I think it'll be really helpful too for future community members. Hope you're healing well from your surgery. Best, Minel (Team Member)

      2. HSN has a great protein shake, Andrew Lessman’s Secure. I drink it every morning and it’s delicious mixed with almond milk. Comes in lots of flavors.

    2. Well it's 8 days post removal, still in pain, still can't chew anything, so my diet has been unsweetened applesauce, Equate chocolate protein shakes, Light 7 Fit yogurt (all I can tolerate) mashed potatoes, and a couple days ago started on scrambled and hard boiled eggs (smooshed with a fork). The applesauce sometimes raises my sugar, every day the yogurt is raising my sugar higher, the mashed potatoes, forget it, my sugar is going up to 300 and it hasn't been that high since before my diet started in July. Before extraction I was on 31 Lantus 2x a day, I lowered it to 25 2 times, and the day of and the next day only was able to take 25 once. Every day I raise the second dose, I'm up to 26 in the am and in the evening I'm raising it a couple of units a day, today will be 16. Though my levels are basically 100 except when I eat, they just go so high, but a few units of Novolog brings it down within a few hours, which is new for me, but it's working.

      1. How are you doing now? Appreciate you sharing your experience. It's tough, I'm sure, to find food options you can tolerate after oral surgery that don't spike your blood sugar. Have you progressed to being able to eat any other foods? Maybe some soft cooked meats or cottage cheese? Be sure to speak with your doctor and/or Dietitian about your numbers as well as any new, changing or concerning symptoms. Be sure to keep a close eye on your healing as stress of surgery or infection can also spike glucose. Wishing you a quick recovery and more stable numbers ahead.
