Newly diagnosed - soda question

Well I am 57 and had slacked off on my physicals after Covid. I finally went and got one recently and the doctor called and told me that I caught diabetes. No idea how! I hardly ever get off the couch and mostly just went to work where I was around only three people regularly and then came home and played video games and ate candy and drank sodas.

Go figure. 😉

Anyway, here is my question/dilemma.

I was out today and stopped in to a convenience store looking for a safe to drink soda. (I went from literally 7-9 sodas a day to zero overnight, but I hate eating without a carbonated beverage) so I am always on the lookout for something I could drink in moderate with meals.

I saw a watermelon Celsius energy drink that did not seem to have any sugar or carbs. It tasted GREAT.

I’m a skeptic. So I was suspicious and researched it when I got home but found conflicting (and in some cases obviously inaccurate info) so I am asking:

Is this ok? And if not, are there any sodas that are SWEET tasting (I hate the flavored waters with no sweetener) sodas that are known to the community?

Thank you! Celsius ingredients

  1. Hi . You will get mixed opinions on this from the community, not about Celsius in particular, but about the use of artificial sweeters. Celsius contain sucralose, also known as Splenda. Personally, I am an advocate of artificial sweeteners for people who crave sweet drinks, but who can't have the sugar. All things are best in moderation, of course. If someone is drinking several a day, it might be time to address that craving and to look for ways to break the habit. But there are those who believe artifical sweeteners are unsafe or that they mess with blood sugar management. I am no medical expert, so keep that in mind. Here is a wonderful article from one of our medical writers that addresses those issues: https://type2diabetes.com/nutrition/sugar-substitutes-whats-the-story. Celsius does contain added supplements and nutrients. So, it is important to check the label and make sure you are not getting too much of any one thing. It might be wise to drink only one a day and try something else for other meals. Have you ever tried flavored sparkling water? There are lots of different brands, some with no sweeter and others with some sweeteners. You could have some fun trying out new products. Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)
