My wife’s glucose level is uncontrollable

Hello All,

I am writing this regarding my wife. So my wife during the time she was pregnant with our son (second baby) developed gestational diabetes. After the baby was delivered her sugar went normal but after 3 months her sugar started going really high and she was diagnosed with diabetes (Her dad is a type II diabetic). I took her to an endocrinologist who tested her for type 1 and Lada but all the antibodies were negative. So he said shes type 2 and he prescribed Xigduo XR because metformin did not work and eventually after a month xigduo caused her dka. After she was discharged from the hospital I took her to see a different endo (in total I took her to about 3 endocrinologist) and they all couldn’t figure out what exactly she had because her type 1 and 1.5 antibodied would all come negative but her sugar used to be super high like 300+ sometimes 400+. The doctor put her on insulin basalglar and novolog. The doctor also prescribed ozempic which did not work then he put her back on xigduo xr 5-1000mg which helped her a little bit. But if she ate a little her sugar would sky rocket. The doctor tested her again for antibodies they still came out negative but c peptide levels dropped from .9 to .84 to .32. All these has been going on for 3 years. Finally the doctor put my wife in mounjaro she took 2.5 for a month then 5mg for a month but she would feel miserable so she stopped it (even though she did lose weight but her sugars used to be still sky high 300-400). She stopped mounjaro for 3 months and now her doctor insisted she go back on it all this time she also was on insulin, xigduo xr and now last week she started mounjaro which gave her the worst dka she was in icu for 3 days. Now she is only on Insulin basalglar and novolog but her sugar level be all over the place. Sometimes even the insulin does not work. We are so lost because no doctor can figure out whats going on. I am writing here to see if anyone had a similar case with uncontrollable sugar and was able to figure our a plan or something? Btw she is 185 pounds and 28 years old. Sometimes if she only eat salad her sugar be in 130-160 but as soon as she eats even half a toast her sugar would sky rocket about 250. Tia

  1. , how awful. You and your wife must be exhausted by all of this. I'm just at the start of the journey of trying to figure out which type I have (suspected type 1/1.5), so I don't have too much experience to share. I did want to mention though that I had the antibody test today and the nurse said if the antibodies come back negative they will likely send me for a scan of my pancreas. Has your wife ever had anything like that done? My understanding is that alongside types 1 and 2, there is a type 3c which happens when the pancreas is damaged in some way (maybe someone who knows a bit more about that can chime in here). I also read that it's possible to have type 1 and be negative for the antibodies, although apparently it's quite rare. I hope your wife can get some answers and find something that helps. Please keep us all updated if you can!

    1. Hi . What a frustrating journey, especially while also raising your first child. gave you some great advice. It is easy to get stuck looking in only one direction when you are seeing a specialist. Their focuses tend to be quite narrow. It might be a good idea to go back to her primary care doctor and ask for a scan of her pancreas. Here is an article from one of our advocates about the different types of diabetes and the potential for misdiagnosis that might interest you, including Type 3c, which is caused by damage to the pancreas: https://type2diabetes.com/living/types-misdiagnosed. I hope other jump in here with better insight and more advice. Please do keep us posted. We will be thinking of both of you. - Lori (Team Member)

      1. I have had T2 for 25 years, and I STILL struggle with rollercoaster glucose levels. Have you ever hear of a "brittle" diabetic? As I understand it, it's someone who has rapid ups and lows. My solution, which I hope will do the trick, is an Omnipod insulin pump that "talks" to my Dexcom CGM and dispensaries insulin according to my glucose levels. Good luck! It's a bear to deal with. Your wife is lucky to have such an avid husband in her corner.

        1. Hi . My sister-in-law has one of those and loves it. Her stress levels have gone way down since she got the insulin pump. I hope it is effective for you as well. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

      2. Thanks bunches, Lori. I hope it helps me get tighter control.
