Metformin AND Victoza Pen

Hi guys, I’m new here. My wife got off her medications for about year and now she is back on Metformin for about a month. Her levels were still too high so they put her on the Victoza Pen as well. First day went better than second, she was very sick with nausea. Now the second day was brutal. She was vomiting harder and more than I ever have seen her do. We have read that these medications can be taken together but are there others that have had problems or know of any issues with theses meds taken together??? The starting level on the Pen is 0.6 once a day. Any Help Thanks in advance.

  1. Hi . Has she reached out to her doctor? You can also try calling your pharmacist to find out whether it really is wise to take both together. Both medications can cause severe stomach upset. We are not medical experts, but it sounds like this might not be a safe combination for her. The constant vomiting will mess with her blood sugar levels and might cause serious drops in combination with the medication. Please do call her doctor (and insist that the answering service request an immediate return call despite the weekend and the holiday.) If she begins to develop any other concerning symptoms, go right to the ER. Best to play it safe. Keep us posted if you don't mind. I will be thinking of you both. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. , hello! My heart goes out to your wife! I have used metformin and did not tolerate it no matter how I tried. But as Lori mentioned, the gastric upset is the worst. It was the stomach/gut pain that took me off the med. It well known that Victoria can cause similar but it seems to be less with that med. I also concur, it’s time to see the dr. Good luck and please keep us posted. Shelley, community moderator 🇨🇦

      1. I take my shot of Victoza first thing in the morning. I take my Metformin about 1-2 hours later with breakfast. Hope she gets better.

        1. Hi there . How have things been going with your wife? Is she tolerating the medicine better now, or did you need to reach out to her doctor? Curious about the outcome of everything. Please feel free to update us when you can. - Cody (Team Member)
