How to know what symptoms are from type 2 and what are from something else?

I have had hypertriglyceridemia my whole life as far as I can tell. First cholesterol test at age 17 (155lbs cross country runner) trigs were 700+. They’ve been as high as 8000+. At age 36 I developed the type 2 diabetes my doctors had long warned me my high trigs put me at risk for, though they never really explained the relationship or how one led to the other. I’m now on year 16 of type 2. I have lots of little odd symptoms and while some are clearly diabetic in nature, others are less clear. I wonder are some of my symptoms trig related? Is my flavor of diabetes different from others? Are there other warning signs I’m missing because I’m just assuming everything is diabetic related? The doctors I have asked pretty much indicate that while there are very common symptoms that all the other strange things could or could not be diabetes related. Is there a good source of symptom tracking and discussion anywhere for type 2?

  1. Thank you for sharing and reaching out. I'd encourage you to keep a record of your symptoms, if you aren't already, and share them with your doctor. Symptoms can be individualized to some degree and identifying changes or trends can be helpful. In addition to speaking with your doctor, this article gives a good summary of typical diabetes-related symtpoms along with additional links: https://type2diabetes.com/symptoms.
