Glucose levels and Grains

I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes about 4 months ago. At the time my numbers ranged between 250 and 350. I was put on 1500 mgs of Metformin and my numbers have decreased to about 100 Fasting and 150 two hour after eating. I have found however that I cannot eat grains, NONE, without my numbers spiking. That means No bread of Any kind, no pasta, nothing! I'm at wits end. I was vegan but now I find myself forced to eat eggs if I am to have a breakfast. Anyone else in this situation? Any suggestions??

  1. No, I actually mean grains. I can get my carbs in the form of vegetables but grains,(i.e. rice, White or brown, pasta, corn, barley, oats, bread be it wheat, rye or pumpernicklel, etc. . .) send my numbers into the 200's. Breakfasts are the hardest for me because I was always a tea and toast kinda girl. My PCP tells me her husband is the same way so obviously I'm not the only one with this issue. I've dealt with IBS for 41 years, now that I've stopped eating grains I have no problem.

    1. Hi @Cindee!
You found an improvement in your IBS symptoms as well as your blood sugar by eliminating grains? That's amazing, thanks for sharing? Just curious if you had tried any sprouted grains and if they had the same negative response? Happy Holidays! -Donna (team member)

  2. Yes, I have tried sprouted grains, same effect.

    1. if you eat grains always have a protein with it, say if you have oatmeal for breakfast have a hard boiled egg with it.

      1. You don't understand. I cannot eat grains. My body does not react well to them. I suffered from IBS for 46 years!! Only now I have come to know that it was the grains that caused all of those painful suffering years. I'm doing okay. Learning how to live without them. It'll take some time but I have learned to use lentils and almond flour in place of grains and I am enjoying them. Thank you for your kind advice.

    2. It is tough to reverse diabetes as a vegan. I was a vegan for two years and gave it up to prioritize my health. But yeah giving up processed foods like bread, pasta, cereals, and any boxed foods was tough (also gave up most fruit except berries), but i was able to reverse diabetes within 6 months sticking to Whole Foods diet, including a lot of fatty meats, eggs, butter.

      1. I agree, it is tough. I am trying to eat WFPB but will not include fatty meats. A little chicken now and then, primarily in the form of soup does well for me. I've been vegan for nearly 10 years and it's tough to turn that mentality off. Health is a priority and I will do whatever is needed. How long have you been diagnosed diabetic? How are your number now? Thanks for your concern.

      2. I was told in March of this year but looking at my blood fwork, I’ve actually been diabetic since 2020.

There is no trace of diabetes now after addressing my diet.
