Family History and Recent Results

I’m a 26 year old male, sedentary (looking to change that), and about 5’9” 180lbs.

Given my dad, mom, and grandparents all having pretty bad T2 DM, while getting a new doctor last week I asked him to do some routine tests.

My A1C came back as 5.6, but my cholesterol levels are very high (listed below). I already have heart disease, a bi cuspid aortic valve. I’m just looking for some advice and what to expect next. Should I start monitoring blood sugar? Will my doctor diagnose me based on the family history and higher cholesterol?

Thanks All!

Triglycerides: 395

Non-HDL: 274

I’ve also reviewed my previous BMPs and they’re all in the 150s for blood sugar.

  1. Hi . We are not medical experts, but, from my own experience, it's unlikely your doctor will diagnose you as type 2 unless your A1C climbes higher, but you are wise to insist that your doctor keep tabs on it. When A1C does rise, sometimes it does so out of nowhere.
I was recently diagnosed as prediabetic with an A1C of 5.8. I've been working on changing my diet, losing weight and some lifestyle changes. Meanwhile, my doctor will monitor my A1C once every six months to make sure it doesn't go up. It might put your mind at ease to make a similar arrangement with your doctor.
Also, keep in mind that statins can increase blood sugar levels in some people. Most doctors feel the trade off (lower cholesterol) is worth it, but there are some statin alternatives now that you can ask your doctor about and there are always more drugs in the pipeline. It might be worthwhile to keep your eyes and ears open for new medications that will not impact your blood sugar.
You seem to be doing all the right things, especially if you are working on dietary and lifestyle changes as well. I hope you stick around and take advantage of the support this community offers. It's a great group of super supportive people. I hope that all helps. Keep us posted, if you don't mind. I'll be thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
