Diagnosed Six months ago

Went to see the doctor 6 months ago for swollen ankles. Got my diagnosis from the A1C test they did. Sure explained a lot of problems I was having. Taking meds now and feel a lot better, but am having a hard time getting control of this thing. I try to eat right and exercise and still I yo-yo. I did well for awhile and then I got a cold. Can't believe what that did to my readings. It has been up and down way outside the 50 points I allowed myself. Does anyone ever get a handle on this or will it always be like this?

  1. Hi Ladygardeenya, Welcome to the Type 2 Diabetes community. Thank you for sharing your story. Being newly diagnosed with diabetes can feel overwhelming, not to mention frustrating, at times. The stress a cold/illness puts on your body can certainly result in higher blood sugar readings that should improve once you are better. I am glad to hear you are feeling better since starting medication. What medication are you on? Have you experienced any side effects? Remember when checking your blood sugar it is just one moment in time and will vary from check to check. Blood sugar is most likely to rapidly change (possibly more than +/- 50 points) following a meal, after exercise, when treating a low blood sugar or after insulin (if you take it). If you continue to see wide fluctuations in your blood sugar readings or readings that are consistently out of the target range your doctor has set for you it may be time to adjust your medication (increase dose vs. adding a new medication). Please don't hesitate to reach out to the T2DM team of moderators if you have any additional questions. Take care. Meryl Krochmal, RD CDE Community Moderator.

    1. Hello
I was diagnosed about a year ago with an adrenal insufficiency which requires lifelong steroid use to control.
My A1c went up to 10.2. Not being very familiar with diabetes I wasn't alarmed but my doctor sure was! That was 6 months ago and with insulin and oral meds I'm finally down to 8.6. My main problem is diet and weight management. I've gained 40 lbs. In the past year!

      1. Thinking of you . Thanks for sharing with us. Wow that's a real improvement just from 6 months! Have you shared your concern with your doctor, or thought of seeing a dietitian/nutritionist if possible as well? As diets / plans can really vary by individual and body it can be hard to find a one-size-fits all type of diet, but more info can be found here as well on some!

    2. Thanks for your email.
Margot the dietician here wanted me to count carbs but that didn't work well for me so I just try to control the size of the portions I have. I love ice cream!!!!
      Thanks again.
      Lila

      1. portion control can really help some! How have you been feeling since controlling portion sizes? Thinking of you!

      2. Seems to help controlling my weight using the portion control method. At the very least I feel that I'm doing something positive.
        Thank you for your question.

    3. My mom is borderline diabetic and I suggested her with very raw veggie smoothies!
