Diabetes and driving

Is anyone on insulin and still driving

  1. Hi . This is a great topic. I hope you get lots of responses. The rules vary from state to state, so you should research that first, but most people on insulin can continue driving if they take precautions. Here is an article from the National Diabetes Association with tips for driving with diabetes: https://diabetes.org/tools-support/know-your-rights/drivers-license-information. Here is an article from one of our advocates for road tripping with diabetes that you might also finding interesting: https://type2diabetes.com/living/traveling-road-trip. I hope this helps and that you get lots of input from the community. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Hello . My job involves commuting to work in another city but also going from place to place once there. I’m in Canada and our driving guidelines say that blood sugar has to be over 4. If I have any hypos, I must correct them first, ensure they are stable and BS over 4 before getting behind the wheel of the vehicle. Where I live, being on insulin is not reportable to the Ministry of Transportation but my license is not commercial, i drive for business. The rules for commercial are different and stricter. With some care, you can likely drive safely. Just know what the expectations are where you live. You don’t have to give up driving because you are diabetic. Shelley, community moderator 🇨🇦
