COVID

A bit less than two weeks ago, my son was exposed to COVID in his workplace. Not knowing at the time, he came home and removed his mask and lived homelife as usual. A week ago he started showing symptoms that were also symptoms of his severe seasonal allergies. Then, over this past weekend, I started having fatigue, sore throat...you get the idea. We are both fully vaxxed. My son is back at work, taking appropriate precautions, of course, including N95 masks.

My question: Can COVID cause a blood sugar totally abnormal for me? My morning fasting numbers are usually mid 70's-mid 80's. The past four mornings the number has been above 100. Today, two hours after breakfast, my blood sugar was 149 where it's usually barely in the 1-teens.

  1. I was curious about this and looked into it. In general, any infection can raise blood sugar levels, and COVID is no exception. Seems like close monitoring is recommended, but this is "normal" for your body reacting to the virus.

I hope you and your family recover swiftly!

    1. Thank you. I am, indeed, positive for COVID. My primary says to treat the symptoms (I have some coughing, some sneezing, sore throat, body aches and my temp has gone to 101 but came down quickly with Tylenol). My primary said to go immediately to the ER if I started having chest pain/discomfort, difficulty breathing/shortness of breath...etc.) I've tried to do everything right and simply presumed I was protected by being vaxxed. Continue to take precautions, folks!

      1. I'm so sorry to hear this 🙁 I hope that you'll have a swift recovery.

Yes, any type of sickness or inflammation has been known to increase your blood glucose levels. Continue to monitor them throughout the day and whenever in doubt, contact your doctor. - CJ Type2Diabetes.com Community Moderator
