Type 2 diabetes is thought to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. The influence of genes (family heredity) appears to be stronger for type 2 diabetes than for type 1 diabetes, in addition to environmental factors like eating and exercise having more of an influence. Type 1 diabetes is thought to result from exposure to pathogens (viruses), foods, and other substances. There are also some genes that may increase susceptibility for developing type 1 diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body no longer produces a sufficient amount of insulin, whereas in type 2 diabetes, the body loses the ability to use the insulin it produces effectively.
