Awareness

Being a Type2 definitely doesn’t get labeled as important. But sure gets labeled as lazy, overweight, and our fault that we have it!! I wish people and professionals would put that same effort in educating themselves about T2D!!

  1. 💯💯 So many in the community can relate to your thoughts, that's why bringing awareness is so important. Do you (or others here) have any tips on how to raise awareness? Best, Minel (Team Member)

    1. Not really tips , but just staying on top of . Medications, supplies, treatments, and making sure you know about Diabetes. The more you the easier it is to advocate. Especially if it effects your life on a 24/7 basis.

      1. I agree. After 10 years of being Type 2 I still get people questioning why I have diabetes because I'm not fat is what they say. I am by no means skinny and I could lose 25lbs. I already lost 25 but people still say I shouldn't be diabetic because I am not overweight. Then I have others that say I can get rid of it if I change my diet. My diet isn't that bad. And I have illustrated many times that without meds my numbers would sky rocket even when I eat well.

        1. definitely seems like you have to prove your as a Type2. The stigmas attached affect everything. Stigmas effect your medication coverage, how doctors treat you as a patient, how others view you , and the amount of support you get . It’s terrible that it’s this way . It shouldn’t be !

        2. I agree with everything you said in your post, doctors make you feel awful and shamed,” I had one say to me, you must have been fat” I was, but lost about 30lbs, I was shocked she said this to me, so damn ignorant. And you don’t have to be fat to get Type 2 diabetes!!!! I was so upset, and angry people can be soooooooooo rude and hurtful. I cried on the way home. That’s the second time a doctor made me cry.

      2. You are right it shouldn't be like this. But seriously my friends, coworkers, anyone who discovers that I am Type 2 usually take a double take because I am not "obese". It drives me nuts that there is such stigmas. But then again with any health condition there are stigmas. We must be our own advocates and do the research on our own. However, I do find there are too many theories, plans, ideas on how to control it that it gets overwhelming. So I focus on the help I get from my dietician and pharmacist. They have been so helpful through the last 10 years. They make sense for me. I also recently started going to a diabetes clinic and it's been amazing. They are so supportive and they get me.

        1. The stigma has to stop on all illnesses. It only hurts the person with illness. People have the adacity to comment on weight, are just pure nasty people and don’t think before they speak.

        2. so so so true, I know it affected me. I never in my life thought there would be such terrible people out there and most are professionals in health care.
