I am a 72 year old male that has been diabetic for the past 12 years. During this time I have had several different treatment options. At the beginning I had Lantus injections for about a year. Because my blood glucose levels would occasionally go very low, a different treatment was prescribed for me. I did not feel when blood sugar levels were dangerously low because I had none of the symptoms of low blood sugar that are typical of that condition.
After different treatment options over the years, my last being Rybelsus pills and Jardiance for two years. The Rybelsus seemed to stop working for me by January of this year (2023), and my A1C climbed up to 9.5. My Pharmacist in conjunction with my Primary care physician suggested that I try Mounjaro. This is quite a new drug and prior authorization with explanation of my need was necessary before I could start on this treatment regimen. My insurance covers the cost of this drug, but I do understand from patient comments, that it is not covered for everyone and it is a very expensive drug.
I started at 2.5 mg for first 4 weeks, then 5.0 mg for 4 weeks. I am currently taking 7.5 mg and believe that this may be my maintenance dose.
This medication has worked wonders for me. My A1C dropped from 9.5 to 6.7 and I have lost 20 lbs. of excess weight. I have had no side effects from this medication and I hope that I can continue Mounjaro as long as possible. I was able to stop the Jardiance that I was taking.
After being on oral pills for more than 10 years it was an adjustment to once again do an injection. The injection is only once per week and comes with an auto-injector so it is very easy and painless to use.
I hope anyone who tries this treatment has the same positive results that I have.
