"Just so nervous 😔 am new to this type 2 Diabetes, finding out what I can and can't have is hard, I haven't shopped for myself yet am nervous at going to shop for myself still. "

  1. Hi . Welcome to the community! You will find lots of people here who have felt like you do now and are willing to help. Try to remember that diabetes didn't develop overnight. You've likely had this for a while now and you didn't even know it. So any change you make in your diet, even the smallest one, is a step toward managing it. Changing your diet is going to take time. Give yourself that time and forgive yourself when you make mistakes. How about tomorrow you focus on one thing, and work on that one thing for a few weeks before moving on to something else? It can take up to three weeks of repetition to make something a new habit. Breakfast is often the hardest meal to change for diabetics because we live in a culture that embraces carbs for that first meal of the day. How about eggs with one slice of whole wheat toast? You can even throw in a few slices of well-rendered bacon. Or maybe some high-fiber cereal with blueberries or strawberries? There are so many yummy choices. If you want to do one more thing, maybe you can try to up the exercise. Park farther away from the grocery store when you shop and take stairs whenever you can. Little changes like that can make a big difference. Here is an article about the fear that can come with a new diagnosis that might help you feel less alone: https://type2diabetes.com/living-with-t2d/reacting-diagnosis. I know this is all very overwhelming, but you will develop new habits over time and you might even find that you enjoy these new foods and this new lifestyle. In the meantime, know that we are here for you whenever you need us. Wishing you the best. - Lori (Team Member)
