Tips and Tricks for Managing Type 2 Diabetes While Traveling
My husband and I both just retired and want to travel the world. We have already started our journey. We are traveling to the Bahamas in a few weeks and Jamaica in a few months.
Many factors in travel impact diabetes care
I have been living with type 2 diabetes for several decades now. I know firsthand how challenging it can be to manage the condition while traveling. Whether it's adjusting to new time zones or dealing with unfamiliar foods, many factors can make it difficult to manage diabetes. My husband takes insulin, so it's even more challenging for him.
Preparation is key with these considerations
However, with some planning and preparation, enjoying a successful vacation or trip is possible. We don't have to compromise our health. Here are some tips and tricks that have helped me to manage my type 2 diabetes while traveling over the years.
Pack smart
Let's talk about packing smart. Make sure to pack all of your diabetes supplies. This includes your meter, test strips, lancets, medication, and extra supplies in case of emergencies. It's also a good idea to bring a cooler bag or an insulated pouch to keep your insulin and other medications at the proper temperature.
Do your research
Research your destination before you travel. Before you leave, learn about the local cuisine and dining options to identify potential challenges or barriers to managing your diabetes. This can help you to plan ahead and make more informed decisions about what to eat and how to manage your blood sugar levels.
Communicate with your crew
Communicate with your travel companions, so they can also look out for you. If you're traveling with others, share your diabetes care plan and warn them about potential health-related emergencies. This can help ensure everyone is on the same page and can support you if needed.
Move around
Stay active while you're on the road or in the sky. Traveling often involves a lot of sitting, making managing your blood sugar levels difficult. Look for opportunities to move around and be active, whether walking around the airport during a layover or exploring your destination on foot.
Be flexible when there are mishaps
Finally, it's essential to be adaptable when traveling with type 2 diabetes. Unexpected challenges may arise, and it's important to be prepared to adjust your plans and your diabetes care as needed.
There are times when you will be in a different time zone. Ensure that you determine when your closest dosage will occur. If you are unsure about when to take medications if changing time zones, talk to your doctor about what steps to follow.
Sometimes, traveling does not go to plan
Managing type 2 diabetes while traveling can be challenging, but it is possible with proper planning and preparation.
If you're like me, something is bound to happen. Does everything ever go according to plan? My advice is don't stress. Have you ever left something at the airport? I certainly have. You feel lost for a few minutes.
It will all work out. We don't want to raise our blood sugar or blood pressure.
By packing smart, researching your destination, communicating with your travel companions, staying active, and being flexible, you can enjoy a successful trip while prioritizing your health and well-being.
Your diabetes doesn't have to limit your travel experiences
Try to enjoy your trip as much as possible, and don't think that your condition is limiting you from making fond memories. You are in control.
I'm looking forward to traveling and seeing new places.
