Type 2 - A1C crept up again - disappointed and need encouragement!

Hi, new poster here. 55 year old F, I've been living with T2 for 6 or 7 years, controlling it with diet and Metformin. I know I had let my diet go over the last year or two, but my last A1C was 8!!! I am so disappointed in myself, and am feeling so down about the whole thing, wondering if I'm going to be able to get my values down again. I don't want diet and diabetes to become my whole life, but obviously I have to be more disciplined.
My A1C has never been this high to my knowledge (plus my doctor tells me I only need an A1c once a year now? )
Can anyone offer advice or encouragement?

  1. Hi . Welcome to the community! I am so glad you found us. You will find lots of others who have been in your position before or are having a similar experience now. It is discouraging, for sure. But it is important to remember that type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease and that your change in A1C might have little to do with the fact that you were not as vigilant about your diet. It is possible that you are not producing as much insulin as you once did or that your cells have become more insulin resistant. An A1C of 8 is high, but it is not so high that you can't bring it back down with some basic lifestyle and/or dietary changes or a change in medication. Diabetes does not have to become your whole life, but the required self-care does have to be integrated into your life. Have you ever met with a dietician who specializes in diabetes? A dietician might be able to help you build new habits that don't leave you feeling deprived or overly focused on food. It sounds like your doctor has faith that you can bring your A1C down. If you are nervous about waiting a year for another A1C test though, ask for a test in three or six months. That's plenty of time to make changes and see if they have enough impact. That is not an unreasonable request, especially if it gives you peace of mind. I hope other chime in here and share their experiences. Please know we are here for you whenever you need support or a place to vent. Gentle hugs. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. What I don’t understand is why your doctor would tell you, you need an A1c once a year now when your A1c was 8, I was told every 3 months,🤔that’s confusing. Do you do some walking that helps with bs to come down. Diabetes is very hard work, I get it, don’t beat yourself up. You just have to tweak things and do the best you can. And I would stick with every three months if that’s what you were doing before to keep an eye on it since it went up, and try and get back on track. I’m rooting for you! You can get them down again. I totally get it when you said you don’t want diet and diabetes to become your whole life, I feel the same, I break into tears over it. Sounds like you need some support can you connect with someone else with diabetes in person and ask them tell them how this is affecting you. It sure affects me in the same ways as you.

      1. Thanks for the encouragement! I will need to follow up with my doctor's office about A1c frequency. I do know that there are T2 diabetes support groups for in person support. I should also look into that.
I appreciate the replies - this all seems so daunting at times, it's nice to know we're not alone 😀
