T2D - trying to gain weight or at least maintain current weight

I'm T2D, diagnosed for about 2 years ( 66 years old), and first year was diet and exercise, then Jardiance ( metformin made me too sick), now going on Rybelsus - A1C is 7.1. My issue is that I am having trouble finding anything that will help me keep my weight - I am 5'7" 135 lbs. Rybelsus is taking my appetite and sometimes a bit nauseated. I'm a thin diabetic - my only symptom so far is high bs - usually in the 130-140 range, unless I eat breads or pasta the night before - chips are bad too. I'm ore worried that I'll lose too much weight and muscle mass as well. Any thoughts or suggestions, ideas on foods that can help ? thank you all for any help

  1. Thanks for sharing and reaching out. I hope that others in our community share their experiences with you. I'd encourage you to speak with your doctor about any new, changing or concerning symptoms, if you haven't already, such as your poor appetite and nausea. Generally speaking, opting for cold and bland foods can help with nausea, as well eating small, frequent meals. Wishing you the best, Kelly, Type2diabetes.com Community Moderator

    1. @Brian W. and - Increasing protein is a good way to help with weight and maintain muscle mass. Quality proteins are lean meats, poultry, seafood, and eggs. Plant based proteins are beans, nuts, good quality tofu products. Some people use meat substitutes but read the ingredient labels. Some substitutes contain additives and substances that are not the best.
Insulin can increase weight gain but it is not muscle, it's usually fat. Consider adding weights to exercise regimen (after clearance from provider). Having a good exercise regimen can help with muscle development and blood sugar control. Brian keep up the good work.
