Swollen ankles

I have been traveling through Italy for the last month, I have clearly been off of my prescribed diet, bread, pasta, pizza. I figured it would be fine for a short time and planned to resume my normal diet when I get back to NJ. This week I noticed that my feet and ankles are swollen. My A1C is normally 6.1, am I in trouble?

  1. Hi , A1C is calculated based on the average of your blood glucose levels for the past 3 months. So an uptick at the end probably won't sway it much. Much of the bread and pizza is fermented, which increases the protein content and decreases the carb count. But, as always, everything in moderation. Your A1C shouldn't see a huge jump, but this and possibly the net one may be elevated.

More problematic is the edema in your feet and ankles. You may want to start to moderate your intake, tempting as I'm sure everything is Check and see if any of the places you are eating offer hearts of palm "pasta". It has a wonderful al dente texture, counts as a non-starchy vegetable and adds a lovely briney, almost olive-like flavor to anything you serve with it - perfect for Italian food!. Pump up the vegetables at your meals, increase your water intake, , and maybe check in with your doctor. Have your glucose levels been within your range? - Wishing you a wonderful rest of your vacation! - Warmly, Donna (team member) Ciao!

    1. I have actually been walking 6 - 7 miles a day, I drink tons of water every day, all day. I noticed my feet and ankles yesterday, I am going avoid carb totally for the remainder of my stay, which end on Sunday. I have not been advised to check my glucose at all, I am technically considered pre-diabetic by my endocrinologist, I take Metforman twice daily. I am hoping that my symptoms are transient. I am scheduled to see my Endo shortly after my return.

      1. , It sounds like you are doing everything you can to stay on top of things! I hope your Endo appointment goes well!
