Is Medicare still paying for Freestyle sensors

Hi,

My wife, who has Medicare and Blue Cross, was getting her freestyle lite sensors through CVS Caremark. But Caremark is now telling her that as of Jan. 1 Medicare isn’t paying for them anymore, and nobody at
Medicare can tell her where or how she can get them.

I was therefore wondering if anybody in this forum is having the same problem?

Thanks very much in advance for any help anyone can give us

  1. Hi - Thanks so much for posting your question. Hopefully someone with personal experience related to this product will chime in soon.

In the meantime, I would encourage your wife to speak with her prescriber and ask them for their thoughts. Her doctor would likely be the most familiar with which insurance plans cover the cost, and how to overcome barriers related to access.

    1. Hi . I'm sorry to hear that your wife is going through this. Abbott currently has a program where you can get a free trial with a Freestyle Libre for 14 days. And since she's on Medicare, she can see if she's able to try a DME supplier. Here's the infographic here: https://www.freestyle.abbott/content/dam/adc/freestyle/countries/us-en/documents/medicare-guide.pdf

You can also pay for sensors without insurance. Some pharmacies may offer lower out-of-pocket costs than insurance, so make sure to check local pharmacies. I've heard that if you have a Costco membership, then you can get two sensors for less than $150 without insurance! I hope that this helps your wife in finding a possible solution to this unfortunate situation. Maybe others can add more insight. Hoping for the best! - CJ (Team Member)
