Chips.

Am I correct corn chips are better than potato chips. I understand that corn chips are complex carbs but potato is more middle carbs? So are corn chips ok in moderation?

  1. Hi . With a little research, I found that potato chips are about 70 on the glycemic index with a glycemic load of about 37. The numbers for corn chips are about 63 (GI) and 28 (GL). So corn chips are slightly healthier, but neither is very good for you. That doesn't mean you can't have corn chips. As you noted, moderation is key. It can also be helpful to have them with lots of salsa or maybe some bean dip. If you are uncertain though, you can try testing your blood sugar after you eat them to see how you react. Everyone is different, including everyone with diabetes. I hope that helps. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. , hello! Lori has supplied you with great information. If I can add in, there are two sides of the street when it comes to what to eat with diabetes. One side of the street says, no you can’t ever have certain foods. The other side of the street says, you can eat anything but in moderation. I’m on the moderation side of the street. I don’t want to give up every food, even the not so healthy ones. My diabetes has to live with me, as I have to live with it. I refuse to let diabetes make me not enjoy life. So I watch portion control. And once in a while I give in to temptation but i get right back to it asap. One way to understand what the food does to your blood sugars is the testing before and at 2 hrs after you eat it. Lori also mention combining foods to slow down the absorption of the glucose in the carb food. That works really well for me too. Hope this helps. Shelley, community moderator 🇨🇦
