Are grapes and raisins good to eat?

I’ve gone online and get two different replies as the whether or not type 2 diabetics can safely eat either. No where on the American Diabetes Association site do they list either one as safe. So are they or are they not?

  1. Thanks for reaching out! Grapes are not unsafe, they are a healthy food but, yes, you do need to watch your portion. As with any fruit, it may have a tendency to raise your blood sugar quickly. It's a good idea to try a small portion at first and combine them with a protein like a piece of cheese or a handful of nuts. In addition to speaking with your doctor, this article may be helpful, she mentions grapes specifically: https://type2diabetes.com/nutrition/understanding-carbs.

Raisins are a dried fruit so same applies. Dried fruits though may have extra sugars added so be mindful of that. This is a great article on dried fruits: https://type2diabetes.com/nutrition/the-sugar-hiding-in-unexpected-places. Best, Kelly, Type2diabetes.com Community moderator
