Surprised

HELLO, I am 68 and two years ago dx with type two and Hashimoto thyroiditis. Very surprised because no one in my family has diabetes. I am still trying to work out my defense. If I don't eat pretty often (4-5hrs) I start getting the shakes and feel in woisey. I keep my numbers below 140, 97 percent of the time and my last a1c was 6.6 not a total fasting. I am scared of acquiring other more auto immune diseases because of these two and not being able to rid myself of the hashimoto or the hypothyroidism. So tired and body aches. Would love to get any help there is on diabetics and eating with a family, too tired for cooking two meals at a time. My Dr said 45grams carb each meal, is that about what everyone does?

  1. Hi Pamela, Thank you for reaching out the our community. I'm sorry to hear about the struggles you have encountered. You may find one of the following article on meal planning helpful: https://type2diabetes.com/nutrition/meal-planning-made-easy . Everyone's tolerance to carbs will vary somewhat, some find that they can have larger amounts of carbs than others. You may want to consider checking your blood sugar 2 hours after a meal. If you blood sugar is back in your target range then you likely had a carb amount that was not too much for you, however if you notice a pattern of blood sugar levels above your target (2 hours after a meal) then you may need to eat a lesser amount of carbs. Good luck!! Meryl Krochmal, RD CDE Community Moderator.
