Health Benefits of Pet Ownership

This month we're talking about how pets can affect living with serious health conditions. If you have a pet, tell us how your pet helps you cope with type 2 diabetes! Don't have a pet? Tell us what comforts you when you aren't feeling great.

  1. My dog is not judgemental, She loves me for who I am. Not my size or looks.

    1. Hi Ksviolin,
Thank you for commenting! The unconditional love from a pet is so special 😀 I am glad that you have a great pet! Take care. Meryl Krochmal, RD CDE Community Moderator.

      1. I know I'm late for this topic, but a pet (at least a companion type of pet- I can't vouch for exotic pets like spiders, snakes, etc) has great health benefits. #1 Exercising and playing with your pet is not only fun, but it is gcan give you a great workout too. #2 Studies have shown that owning a pet reduces your chances of cardiac events (a study done in Sweden attributes much of it to oxytocin- the " bonding" hormone.

        1. Hi Coloradohurricane,

Great points!! Thank you so much for sharing here with us - do you have any pets?

          Best,

      2. If I didn't have my dog, Lacey, I wouldn't get up most days. My bad days I have others that help me. When we get in bed at night it is our play and cuddling time. She gives me so much comfort. I've gotten upset at times and wanted to rehome her but my daughter always comes back with the fact that I not only love her ,I need her.
