Winter Hydration: Hot Water and Lemon

A lot has been written regarding daily water intake and how hydration is important to our skin, bodies and our diabetes. I’m all about filling up my reusable water bottle multiple times a day, and I feel “off” if I don’t have at least 60 ounces of water in my body every day. But here's the thing: it’s harder to drink water when the weather is cold - at least it is for me.

A few weeks ago I was attending a 4 day conference. The days started early and ended late. I was drinking too much caffeine, and wasn't getting enough sleep or water. I felt crampy, bloated and tired and I was drinking way too much caffeine. The temperatures had dipped into the teens (thank you arctic blast) and the heat in my hotel room was dialed up to 11.

Hot water and lemon

I didn’t like how I was feeling and I didn't want it to impact my work, let alone my blood sugars. On the third day of the conference, mid morning and during sessions - I knew things had to change. I felt over caffeinated, the ballroom was freezing, and I’d already had 4 cups of coffee. During the break I walked over to the coffee/tea station and made myself a cup of hot water with lemon and drank it. Then I made another and walked back to my seat. Not only did it keep me warm, it was tasty and kept me hydrated and focused. I drank at least four cups of hot water and lemon during the morning sessions and I felt much better!

I’ll still drink 24 ounces of water first thing in the morning and before my morning coffee. But I've taken to drinking hot water and lemon mid morning and sometimes after dinner. Some say hot water and lemon is good for all sorts of things. For me it’s about staying hydrated and healthy in the winter and cutting back on caffeine. Also: I LIKE IT.
