Walnuts – Get Cracking and Enjoy!

I love walnuts! As a matter of fact, as I’m typing this article, I’m happily munching on walnuts brimming from a small espresso cup filled with them.

Reasons why I love walnuts

So why do I dig them?

  1. Walnuts taste awesome.
  2. They contain super high levels of antioxidants, and do battle (and win) against the damage caused by bad LDL cholesterol.
  3. Walnuts not only look like brains (and now you will never unsee that comparison) but they are actually considered brain food. Walnuts contain vitamin E, melatonin, folate and a high concentration of DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid. Speaking of Omega-3 fatty acids, walnuts contain the highest amount of the plant based omega-3s, essential fatty acids, and alpha-linolenic acid — so yeah, good for our hearts! Also: Word on the street is that plant-based Omega-3s may reduce inflammation.
  4. Walnuts are loaded with magnesium and phosphorus which help our muscles and bone mass. One ounce of these super delicious nuts contains 4 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of carbs. And a little goes a long way to make us feel full and satisfied. Unless you’re allergic (in which case I am so sorry to bring it up), you might want to consider adding some walnuts to your daily routine.
  5. Making smoothies? Toss in a few tablespoons, sprinkle in your salads, and add a few teaspoons to your breakfast yogurt or steel-cut oats.
    FYI: If you’re big into making pesto — you can use walnuts instead of pine-nuts — easier on the finances and just as tasty.

Fill a small tupperware container with an ounce of walnuts to keep in your car, lunch, or work bag for a quick snack on the go.
