News About Heart Disease and Type 2 Diabetes
It’s very easy to get hyper-focused on blood glucose levels when we’re managing diabetes every day. We most likely take medication to help control blood glucose levels, we measure blood glucose levels on our meters, and we may even feel lousy when our blood glucose levels are low or high. But, with all that focus on blood glucose levels we must remember that the main threat, hands down, to our future health and well being is heart disease.
Of course, heart disease is a significant threat to everyone – it is the number one cause of death in the U.S. every year. But, simply having diabetes more than doubles the risk of heart attack or stroke, and that increased risk makes heart disease the single most serious “complication” of diabetes. And fortunately, managing blood glucose levels and managing heart disease risks go hand-in-hand in many ways.
In September, The American Diabetes Association and American Heart Association will be releasing a “Scientific Statement” updating their 2007 joint recommendations for the prevention of cardiovascular disease with diabetes. "Update on Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Adults With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Light of Recent Evidence: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association" will include recent results from key research to look how lifestyle, blood glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol management contribute to the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in people with type 2 diabetes.
