Useful Products for People with Diabetes

I just got back from the American Association of Diabetes Educators conference where several thousand diabetes educators convene to learn about new research in diabetes, best practices and the latest products available to help people in managing their diabetes. Here are my favorite four products from the exhibit hall this year:

Cali’Flour Foods-Cauliflower Pizza Crust

One of the issues with eating pizza, is the carbohydrate content in the crust. This new product by Cali’Flour Foods is a cauliflower crust that contains only 2-6 grams of carbohydrate, 60 calories, 5 grams of protein and under 5 grams of fat per one third crust serving. The sodium content is not too high (80 mg/serving) and the crusts are very flavorful. In fact, so flavorful that it can easily be a snack as is (no toppings required). The crusts come in a variety of flavors from original Italian, sweet red pepper, spicy jalapeño or plant based. You can order these crusts online at califlourfoods.com

Wonderful Pistachios

I don’t think I’ll need to take a lot of convincing about the benefits of pistachios for people with diabetes. These nuts are a good source of protein and fiber and for a 100 calorie portion, you can eat 30 pistachios. That is a great heart healthy nutrient package deal. One of my favorite things to teach people with diabetes is the “pistachio principle” which is a mindful eating technique when you eat in shell pistachios. The key is to leave the shells in front of you as a visual cue to how many pistachios you have consumed.

Walden farms

Salad dressings, dips, sauces, syrups, coffee creamers, and mayonnaise are some of the diabetes friendly food product line from Walden Farms. The products are zero grams of carbohydrate and no calories. And most importantly, they taste great. This is a nice set of options to help you with your healthy eating plan. My go to salad dressings are always one of the flavors in the Walden Farms brand. Many grocers carry these products, and if they don’t, you can ask the store manager to order them for you, or you can order them online.

Skin Tac Wipe and TacAway – adhesive remover wipes

For those who use wearable devices like insulin pumps or CGMs, this product is a great find. Skin tac is used as an adhesive barrier for those times that your device may be need some extra stickiness to stay on your body. TacAway is used to remove adhesive residue that may get on your fingers when you use Skin Tac. You can speak with your insurance to ask if this can be billed as a medical durable supply to get better insurance coverage for this product. Skin Tac and TacAway are products of the Torbot Group, Inc.
