National Get Fit Don’t Sit Day!

May 2 was National “Get Fit Don’t Sit Day,” or so the powers that be who create calendars say. OK, I’ll buy it. I’m all for getting fit and sitting less. But how do we actually do that? I mean personally, I can talk a great game, but…

How can we actually move more and sit less?

We can walk! God knows I love to get my walk on and now that the weather is finally getting nice, I can do it more but sometimes I don’t feel like walking!

We can vow to embrace the extra steps, use the elevators less and the stairs more at work and at home. OK, I’m game!

May is also National Bike Month! We can put air in our tires, our bike helmets on our heads and move that way.

Personally, while I need to do more cardio, I also need to stretch more, so I’m looking to add a gentle stretch yoga class to my personal calendar. I found a gentle stretch yoga class near me, but it doesn’t start until after Mother’s day, so until then, YouTube is my friend and so is the giant stretch ball currently calling my living room home!

Farmers’ market season is now upon us which is great for our tastebuds and our waistlines. One of the great things about farmers’ markets is that you can actually walk, talk, purchase and taste. One town over from me is the first one locally to kick off their farmers’ market on Saturdays from 8am to noon. A few friends and I have been meeting there every Saturday at 8am and walk the perimeter of the market 4 or 5 times before we go food shopping. It’s a great way to move, catch-up with one another and it’s so nice to be outside!

How are you going to sit less and get more fit? I’m open to any and all advice!
